Background
The (E86) Z4 M Coupe was BMW's successor to the polarizing "clown shoe" Z3 M Coupe. Unlike the Z3 M Coupe, which was a parts bin car--I know, I own one--the Z4 M Coupe was designed from the onset with M and Coupe variants in mind. As a result, the Z4 M Coupe has none of the shortcomings of its Z3 predecessor. The fastback roof adds an air of elegance to the brutish, flame-surfaced lines of the Z4 roadster, and it also adds rigidity. Underneath the sheet metal and you will find the last application of one of BMW's greatest engines, the S54B32 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder producing its 330 horsepower. That power is routed through a six-speed manual gearbox and delivered to the rear wheels through an advanced multi-link rear suspension. When its time to stop, aluminum hub, cross-drilled floating brakes developed for the E46 M3 CSL make quick work of bringing the Z4 M Coupe's 3230 pounds to rest.
The Z4 M Coupe was one of the last of the old-school M car recipes: a high compression, high revving, normally aspirated inline six-cylinder engine powering only the rear wheels through a manual gearbox. With only 1,815 (North American Market) Z4 M Coupes produced between 2006 and 2008, it's rare too--but that's not why you should buy one. You should buy one because they are cheap! That's a relative term, but lets take the long view for a moment. The Z4 M Coupe has reached the apex of the inverted bell curve of appreciation where values are only going to climb. I remember this point in the S54-powered Z3 M Coupe market and it's happening now with the Z4M. A look at the future supports this argument. The successor E89 Z4 had no M variant (sans the fantastic GTLM Z4 race cars), and the future of the BMW M division is one where turbos are the norm, manual gear boxes are becoming extinct, and four-wheel drive is on the horizon (F??? M5). The Z4M is one of the most evolved examples of that old-school M car recipe in a two-seat coupe that is unapologetically focused the driving experience. Best of all you can brag to your muscle car friends about how it was made right here in the USA at BMW's Spartanburg, SC plant.
Summary
This Z4 M Coupe is an excellent buy, priced very aggressively for its condition and miles. I originally found it last year for a friend and am now selling it because he needed to fund a new home purchase. It was originally sold in Georgia and remained in the South until I brought it to Colorado followed by a year in Bozeman, Montana with my friend--where it lived in a heated garage during the winter months. As such, it has never been exposed to salt or winter conditions and looks the part. I don't have records prior to my ownership, but the Carfax shows regular services at the dealer and specialist shops. The Carfax also reports minor accident damage (specifically reported as "slight"), which is described as dents or scratches. In preparation for sale we gave it a complete inspection and noted no glaring defects or signs of invasive repairs. I suspect the rear bumper cover may have been repainted, which was likely the extent of the affected parts. We also completed a fresh S54 valve adjustment and replaced a faulty ABS unit. The interior and exterior are in excellent condition and the only modifications from stock are a Super Sprint exhaust. As it sits, it's a turn-key Z4 M Coupe ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.
